HTML Character Sets

HTML 4.01 has a number of characters defined that can be accessed using &name;, in XHTML this caracter access can be included but that carries an overhead and so &#xxx; is used where xxx is a numeric, that relates to the document character set. UTF-8 is now the standard character set, and UTF-8 characters can be accessed using the numeric format.
